CSIP Research Forum ~ Governance by Data and Algorithm: Just Because We Can, Does It Mean We Should

University of Regina University of Saskatchewan

Recent events have made us aware of the data held about us by firms like Facebook and Google, and how that data is used to make decisions about us—from what advertisements to target us with to the price we pay for air travel.

The Centre for the Study of Science and Innovation Policy (CSIP) invites all students, faculty and researchers interested in the study of science, technology and innovation policy to participate in a bi-weekly research forum. Each forum will involve a quick roundtable of introductions, a review of topical policy issues, one or more brief research reports and general discussion about research strategies and methods that are being or could be used to examine various angles of the policy system. You can simply drop in and listen or offer to present some of your findings.

CSIP is initially focused on innovation challenges in the agricultural biosciences, energy, health innovation and big-data realms, but would entertain a wider range of discussions.

Governance by Data and Algorithm: Just Because We Can, Does It Mean We Should?

PRESENTED BY: Justin Longo, JSGS Cisco Research Chair in Digital Governance

Recent events have made us aware of the data held about us by firms like Facebook and Google, and how that data is used to make decisions about us—from what advertisements to target us with to the price we pay for air travel. This data analytics approach has also infiltrated the world of public sector governance through a revision of traditional policy analysis into a data and algorithmic method called policy analytics. Justin will focus on the practical and democratic limits that governments must address when considering how to pursue effective and legitimate governance in the digital era.
