The Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy (JSGS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Marc-André Pigeon as an Assistant Professor in the area of co-operatives and public policy at its University of Saskatchewan (UofS) campus, starting September 1, 2018. In addition to this faculty appointment, Marc-André will hold a Strategic Research Fellowship with the Centre for the Study of Co-operatives.

“It is an honour to be joining the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School and the Centre for the Study of Co-operatives.  It feels right in so many ways, not just because I've spent my working life in and around academia, policy development and co-operatives/credit unions, but also because I've long believed that Canada's best policy thinking and doing happens outside of Ottawa in places like the JSGS,” says Pigeon. “Over the next few months, I will be spending my time getting to know my fellow faculty members, supporting the Centre as it meets with funding partners and re-imagines its future, and doing co-operative and credit union-related research. I am anxious to get going."

With a PhD in Mass Communications from Carleton University, Dr. Pigeon has worked in a number of economics and policy-related positions, most recently as assistant vice-president of public policy at the Canadian Credit Union Association (CCUA). Prior to this, he served as the CCUA’s interim-vice president of government relations, and as a special advisor and senior project leader at the federal Department of Finance. He has also served as the lead analyst on several federal Parliamentary committees, including the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance, the Standing Committee on Public Accounts, the Standing Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce, and the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Forestry. Dr. Pigeon also worked as an economic researcher at the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College and started his career as a financial journalist at Bloomberg Business News.

Murray Fulton, the Director of the JSGS U of S campus and the Centre for the Study of Co-operatives, is excited about the appointment. “We are delighted that Marc-André is joining the JSGS and the Centre. His academic background and his tremendous breadth of experience will allow the Centre to address the significant challenges the co-operative sector is facing today.”

Dr. Pigeon has an academic background in economics and journalism, and he has studied at Carleton University, the University of Ottawa and the New School University in New York City.  His research interests include the study of co-operatives, behavioural economics/psychology, income distribution, money and banking, and fiscal and monetary policy.
