CSIP Research Forum ~ Patients, Experimental Medical Interventions & the “Right to Try” – Questions of Policy and Governance

Video Conference

Science, technology and innovation is essential in shaping our future. Translating the narrative into clear options, strategies and outcomes is necessary, but far from simple.

Presented by: Amy Zarzeczny, JSGS Associate Professor

There are various examples of growing patient demand for access to unproven or experimental medical interventions. The “Right to Try” movement, which refers most directly to access to experimental pharmaceuticals, is one such example that illustrates associated tensions relating to autonomy, public interest, evidence and the role of regulation, among other issues. Drawing on the “Right to Try” movement for context, this forum will provide an opportunity to consider and discuss questions of policy and governance raised by rights-based claims for access to experimental medical interventions.

About CSIP:

The Centre for the Study of Science and Innovation Policy (CSIP) invites all students, faculty and researchers interested in the study of science, technology and innovation policy to participate in a bi-weekly research forum. Each forum involves a quick roundtable of introductions, a review of topical policy issues, one or more brief research reports and general discussion about research strategies and methods that are being or could be used to examine various angles of the policy system. You can simply drop in and listen or offer to present some of your findings.
