2019 Wîcihitowin Indigenous Engagement Conference

Alumni Events University of Regina University of Saskatchewan

The 5th Wîcihitowin Indigenous Engagement Conference invites community organizations, governments and businesses to learn about inclusive representation of Indigenous people as employees, volunteers and decision-makers. Within the context of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, if you’re working towards respectful Indigenous engagement and inclusion in a community-based setting, this conference is for you. Join us on the path to reconciliation.

Now in its 5th year, the Wîcihitowin Indigenous Engagement Conference is back again on October 16 and 17 at TCU Place in Saskatoon!

Brought to you by the Aboriginal Friendship Centres of Saskatchewan, the City of Saskatoon, United Way Saskatoon & Area, Saskatchewan Health Authority and the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School, this conference engages individuals, businesses, community organizations and governments who are looking to learn about respectful engagement and inclusion of Indigenous people. Wîcihitowin is much more than just a conference – it provides an opportunity to connect with people on an emotional level, to re-energize your soul, and encourage you to work towards reconciliation and build community.

This year, the Wîcihitowin Indigenous Engagement Conference is paying respect to the survivors of the Indian residential schools, Indian day schools, missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, and the sixties scoop, by recognizing that they were, and continue to be, seeds for change.

Nationally respected, the late Elder Walter Linklater shared many universal teachings that continue to help guide people on a path to reconciliation. To honour him, his teaching of ‘being a good person and try to live a good life’ inspires the theme of this year’s conference. As an attendee, you can expect to learn from some of the core teachings of the late Elder Walter Linklater, gather key takeaways on timely and relevant topics, and gain practical resources to incorporate reconciliation in both your personal and professional life.

With over 40 confirmed local and national speakers—including Canadian Senator Lillian Dyck and Amazing Race Canada winners Dr James Makokis and Anthony Johnson—you can expect to be engaged on topics such as:

  • the historical realities of colonialism and the continued impact on Indigenous communities
  • effecting organizational change
  • restoring the rights of Indigenous women and girls to citizenship and safety
  • community empowerment and reconciliation
  • intergenerational trauma
  • language and culture
  • land-based education, and much more.
