The intended purpose of the Senate is to give Canada’s regions an equal voice, revise legislation by providing a “sober second thought” and to investigate national issues. Recently the Senate’s appointment process has been reformed by the Prime Minister to introduce more independence. Senator Cotter will reflect on how those reforms have changed the way the Senate does business and how this impacts the way the Senate and the House of Commons interact.

Featuring: The Honourable W. Brent Cotter, Q.C., Senator

The Honourable W. Brent Cotter, Q.C. is one of Canada’s foremost legal ethicists, with extensive experience in public service and the law. A former dean of the College of Law at the University of Saskatchewan and one of the original professors and writers in the field of legal ethics in Canada, he is a member of the Law Society of Saskatchewan and the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society. Senator Cotter is currently a member of the Standing Senate Committee on National Security and the Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs.
