The biggest challenges of wicked problems like climate change cannot be solved in isolation. If universities and other research institutions want to maximize their positive contribution, they must engage in transdisciplinary relationships that bridge science, policy, and community. In this forum, Dr. Garrett Richards will explore transdisciplinarity through different scopes: as a lens for understanding interfaces between science, policy, and community; and as a set of practices for more engaged and impactful research institutions. The discussion will be grounded by examples from climate change and sustainability.
About our speaker:
Garrett Richards is an assistant professor with the Environmental Policy Institute at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador. His background education includes biology (UofS), political science (UofS), environmental studies (UofS), and interdisciplinary studies (UVic) - leading to research interests in climate change, renewable energy, science-policy interfaces, knowledge mobilization, and transdisciplinarity. At Grenfell Campus, he currently serves as Graduate Officer for the new PhD program in Transdisciplinary Sustainability and coordinates a partnered research shop called the Environmental Policy Innovation Lab.
