JSGS Virtual Case Study Showcase

Video Conference

The Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy invites you to attend its Virtual Case Study Showcase on May 18, featuring its first-ever group of online Master of Public Administration (MPA) who will be presenting their recommendations for providing critical programs and services to those across Canada, as a response to the war in Ukraine.

On February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine attacking critical military and civilian infrastructure, and disrupting thirty years of independence and development for the nation. An escalation of this magnitude has not been seen since the Second World War. The people and government of Ukraine have responded with fierce and steadfast resistance, maintaining control of their government and the capital of Kyiv. This war has come at a tremendous cost—civilian and military lives have been lost, and millions of Ukrainian women and children have sought refuge abroad which has resulted in one of the largest displacements of people in Europe’s history.

In response, global sanctions on the Russian economy have left oil markets on the rise with an uncertain future. Canada has shown support for bringing in refugees and providing military and humanitarian aid. Domestically, the rapid and ongoing response to the war on Ukraine has posed implementation challenges for the public service. Issues concerning immigration, energy and communication security, have activated critical questions about how the public service responds to crises.

As part of an intense two-week virtual residency—which includes a series of workshops led by JSGS faculty, executives-in-residence and alumni from Ukraine, and policy practitioners—our online Master of Public Administration students have been examining the war in Ukraine and the policy implementation implications for Canada.

Join us on May 18 at 10 a.m. (CST) to hear from these bright and aspiring policy leaders as they present their recommendations for providing critical programs and services to those across Canada.

Each group will present their recommendations, followed by a series of questions from our judging panel. Following the student presentations, the panel of judges will deliberate and will announce the results live on May 18 from 1:00-1:30 p.m. (CST).
