Presentations by Tamer Qarmout, PhD Candidate; Kathy Johnson, MPP Student; Boa Kim, MPP Student; and Kristin Bruce, MPP Student

Come listen and join in the discussion with your fellow students as they present their research on the following topics:

Delivering Aid Without Government: International Aid and Civil Society Engagement in the Recovery and Reconstruction of the Gaza Strip following the 2008 Israeli Offensive, presented by Tamer Qarmout, PhD candidate

Qarmout’s research examines the role of international donors in policy making in the Gaza Strip after the Hamas takeover of Gaza in 2007. His research takes a closer look at the dynamics and the impact of international donors’ financing on the CSOs and whether their funding has strengthened CSOs’ role at the expense of the government.

The Role of Governance in Balancing Competing Institutional Logics in Co-operatives, presented by Kathy Johnson, MPP student

Recent changes to regulatory policy in the financial services industry in Canada, coupled with advances in technology and urbanization of the population, have led to numerous mergers and consolidations among Credit Unions (CUs), particularly in Western Canada. This has the potential to undermine some of the historic advantages of CUs when compared to other financial services organizations, and it may require CUs to begin to operate more like banks. Johnson’s thesis provides a detailed examination of how senior leaders in one large Western Canadian credit union are handling these issues, and explores what the broader implications might be for policy and governance of CUs in Canada.

Deputy Minister Salary in Canada: Political and Economic Forces, presented by Boa Kim, MPP student

The issue of public sector salaries has interested both the public and governments in Canada since the late 1990s, an interest that has been reflected in the open provision of public sector pay information and the adoption of pay-for-performance schemes for senior government officials such as DMs. Kim’s research investigates how the compensation level of DMs is determined in the provincial and the federal governments.

A Case Study of Governance: The Saskatoon South East Water Supply System, presented by Kristin Bruce, MPP student
The conceptualization of water security increasingly frames global discussion of water issues. In 2012, water security became the local frame for water discussions in Saskatchewan when the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority was renamed the Water Security Agency. This research asks if the name change signifies governance transformation toward an approach that can accommodate complexity and uncertainty in water challenges as supported by the water security framework or a linguistic rebranding and the continuation of traditional water management.
