Student Workshop: From Open Government to Open Governance

University of Saskatchewan

Facilitated by Justin Longo, Cisco Systems Research Chair in Big Data and Open Government, Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy

For the past twenty years, academics have been talking about the shift from government to governance - where authority and action for public benefit is no longer confined to formal governments and is, instead, spreading throughout society to actors and organizations performing governance functions. A parallel shift is also happening between traditional notions of open government - such as information transparency, open data, citizen engagement and accountability - and open governance that embraces a vision of officials and citizens collaborating to solve society’s biggest problems, and doesn’t presuppose that government will lead and citizens will follow. In this workshop, we’ll explore examples of this emerging form of governance and experiment with what open governance means in practice.
