Student Lecture: Serving Canada Overseas

University of Regina University of Saskatchewan

Brian Herman, Canadian Diplomat

Brian Herman was born and raised in Regina. Although he left “temporarily” in 1969 to attend McGill University, and later joined the Canadian foreign service, Regina has always been his home and he frequently visits. Until retirement in September, his 42 year career has taken him to eight foreign postings, in Europe (and the Arctic), Asia and the United States, and many places in between. Brian met and married his wife, Marianne, while on assignment in Denmark in 2000-2004. He was the first resident Canadian diplomat to represent us in Lithuania in 2004-2007 and most recently promoted Canada’s - and Saskatchewan’s - interests in the U.S. Midwest while at our Consulate General in Chicago (2009-2013). Brian is passionate about global challenges facing us such as climate change, and the important international role played by our provinces and cities. He was awarded the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal in 2006. He is an ardent supporter of the Roughriders and tweets @BrianHerman14.
