For the past decade, Dr. Alec Couros’ photos have been used by professional catfishers to defraud hundreds of victims on every major social network and dating site. Despite his tireless personal efforts to raise awareness about this growing concern, social network providers seem content to ignore the problem as it grows in scale and sophistication. In his talk, Dr. Couros will discuss his personal experiences with catfishing scams and will describe what these experiences can teach us about digital literacy in a post-truth era.

Fast moving fields of bioscience research and medical innovation often promise many rewards including enhanced understanding of human development, improved treatment options and even economic or related benefits. Accordingly, they frequently generate excitement and expectations among different audiences, including the public. However, they can also raise complex legal, ethical and policy issues. This presentation will highlight some of the challenges associated with regulating promising areas of medical science, including balancing different priorities and the limits of legal and policy tools.
