*CANCELLED* Canada's Courts: What you should know and why you should care

University of Regina

In celebration of Law Day, JSGS and the CBA Saskatchewan Branch are pleased to host this public lecture.

**Until further notice, all JSGS public events are cancelled to minimize the risk of illness and transmission of COVID-19.**

We Canadians tend to take our court system for granted. This is understandable because it is what we know. However, compared to what exists today in much of the rest of the world, our system is extraordinary. This is so for two main reasons: the independence of our judges and our strong culture of judicial integrity. Protecting all of this is essential if we are to maintain the rule of law.

Chief Justice Robert G. Richards was appointed to the Court of Appeal in 2004 and named Chief Justice in 2013. He received a B.Comm (1975) and LL.B. (1979) from the University of Saskatchewan and an LL.M. (1982) from Harvard Law School. The Chief Justice was counsel in over 40 Supreme Court of Canada appeals. The Chief Justice has held numerous leadership positions in the legal community including Chair of the Supreme Court of Canada – Canadian Bar Association Liaison Committee and Co-Chair of the National Canadian Bar Association Constitutional and Human Rights Law Section. He is a frequent, long-time lecturer at the College of Law, University of Saskatchewan and at the Bar Admission Course.

Light refreshments will be served.

This lecture has been approved for 1.5 CPD Ethics Hours by the Law Society of Saskatchewan
