The best of both worlds: HR expertise with an MPA perspective

For Nicolas Rincon Bonilla (MPA’24), pursuing his graduate studies at the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy’s University of Saskatchewan (USask) campus turned out to be “one of the best decisions” he ever made.

With a Bachelor of Science in economics and the professional experience of working in the Human Resources (HR), a degree in business administration might have been a more appealing path for many. But Rincon Bonilla had other plans.

“My interest in public policy emerged during my undergraduate program in economics, where I learned about policymaking and its potential impact on society and communities,” he said.

Having spent much of his life in Bogotá, Colombia’s capital city, Rincon Bonilla closely saw the working of public administration in the country through the development of policies across sectors.

“I was curious to learn how decisions affecting millions are made and wanted to contribute meaningfully,” he said.

What felt like a difficult decision at first soon became one that brought an “exceptional sense of community” – providing room for both professional development and personal growth.

“I chose JSGS for its strong academic focus and curriculum – and I graduated with a Master of Public Administration degree with essential skills that go beyond the walls of academia,” he said.

"Living abroad and discovering new cultures always fascinated me and the community I found at JSGS really helped me develop my true potential and have a place to call home in Canada."

As an international student from Colombia, starting over in a new country is always full of challenges and Rincon Bonilla had lots to figure. But with the support and guidance of classmates and faculty members, he was not alone on this journey.

“Each professor challenged me to see the world from different perspectives, and every classmate brought unique experiences that enriched my learning,” he said. “Living abroad and discovering new cultures always fascinated me and the community I found at JSGS really helped me develop my true potential and have a place to call home in Canada.”

Since completing his masters, Rincon Bonilla has now transitioned to an administrative position in the private sector, where he applies his HR expertise with a newly added policy perspective acquired at JSGS.

“The MPA courses provided a theoretical framework for policy development, implementation, and evaluation,” he explained, “but more importantly, they also taught me the importance of strategic thinking, teamwork, and effective communication.”

Rincon Bonilla now looks forward to taking on roles that build on his experience and knowledge to make a meaningful contribution to the community.
