Dan Perrins Public Policy Award

The Dan Perrins Public Policy Award was established in 2020 to support a graduate student in the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy (JSGS) at either the University of Regina or the University of Saskatchewan, who has demonstrated academic excellence and community involvement. One award of $2,000 will be presented annually to a JSGS student from the University of Regina or the University of Saskatchewan campus.

Students must meet the following criteria to apply:

  • Enrolled in the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy;
  • Achieved a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 80%;
  • Demonstrates community involvement;
  • The student is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident; and
  • Preference will be given to students who self-identify as Indigenous.

The Michael Atkinson and Heather McWhinney Scholarship for Student Success

Dr. Michael Atkinson, former JSGS Executive Director & Heather McWhinney, JSGS Professional Affiliate

As the founding executive director of the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy, Dr. Michael Atkinson (Ph.D.) is a visionary, true leader, mentor and inspiration to all students and alumni who have passed through our halls. To demonstrate our appreciation to Michael, the JSGS launched the Dr. Michael Atkinson Scholarship fund to assist students pursuing an MPP or PhD degree with demonstrated academic and research excellence. One award of $1,000 will be presented annually to a JSGS student from the University of Regina or the University of Saskatchewan campus.

Students must meet the following criteria to apply:

  • Pursuing a Master of Public Policy (MPP) or PhD in Public Policy degree in the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy at either campus.
  • Registered and remains registered as a full-time student in the semester the scholarship is presented.
  • Minimum grade point average of 80%.
  • Completed the required course work in the first two years for MPP students or completed the required course work, passed comprehensive exams and in the first four years for PhD students.
  • Demonstrates academic and research excellence; preference is given to a student whose study focuses on governance

Garry H. Beatty Scholarship

The Garry H. Beatty Scholarship was established through a donation provided by friends and colleagues in memory of Garry H. Beatty, recognizing his long career in Saskatchewan Finance and the Crown sector. This scholarship assists students who are pursuing an MPA degree in the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy. One award of $1,600 will be presented annually to a JSGS student from either of the University of Regina or University of Saskatchewan campus.

Students must meet the following criteria to apply:

  • Must be a Canadian citizen
  • Enrolled in the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program
  • Registered and remains registered in a minimum of 6 credit hours in the semester the scholarship is presented
  • Has a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 80%.

Anna Krutova Alumni Memorial Award

The JSGS Alumni Association Award was established in 2021 to assist students pursuing a master’s degree program at the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy.

One award of $1,000 will be presented annually to a University of Regina or University of Saskatchewan graduate student.

Students must meet the following criteria to apply:

  • Enrolled in a master’s degree program in the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy;
  • Is a fully qualified graduate student;
  • Is not holding other graduate funding valued at more than $5,000 at the time the award is presented; and
  • Students must submit a 250-word statement highlighting their community involvement and dedication to public service. The statement must also describe the applicant’s financial need. Applicants may submit reference letters that support their community involvement and dedication to public service.

Robert C. Douglas & Joanne R. Sutherland Scholarship

The Robert C. Douglas and Joanne R. Sutherland Scholarship was established through a donation by Mr. Douglas and Ms. Sutherland as a thank you to Saskatchewan for their years working in the public service. This scholarship assists students who are pursuing a Masters degree in Public Policy or Public Administration at the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy. One award of $2,250 will be presented annually to a deserving JSGS student from either the University of Saskatchewan or the University of Regina campus.

Wayne Wouters Scholarship

The Wayne Wouters Scholarship was established through donations provided by friends of Wayne Wouters to provide recognition for his long-standing public career and to support JSGS students enrolled in the MPA and MPP programs. One award, valued at $2,750, will be presented annually to a deserving JSGS student from either the University of Saskatchewan or the University of Regina campus.

Students must meet the following criteria to apply:

  • Pursuing a Master of Public Policy or Master of Public Administration degree
  • Minimum grade point average of 80%
  • Registered and remains registered in a minimum of 6 credit hours in the semester the scholarship is presented
  • Demonstrates proactively engaging in philanthropic endeavours and/or community service

Hartley and Margaret Fredeen Scholarship in Co-operative Studies

Margaret and Hartley Fredeen lived their lives in Saskatchewan believing that co-operatives contribute to stable and economically inclusive and peaceful societies. The goal of the scholarship is to support students in creating and sharing knowledge about co-operatives. The successful applicant for the Hartley and Margaret Fredeen Scholarship in Co-operative Studies will be chosen based upon the applicant’s proposed research exploring the ways that co-operatives can make our lives better, whether that be locally or globally.

Leo and Bruce Thordarson Social Economy and Co-operatives Award

The Leo and Bruce Thordarson Social Economy and Co-operatives Award is offered annually to a student who is enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in the Social Economy, Co-operatives, and Nonprofit Sector program through the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy.

How to apply: Send an email to coop.studies@usask.ca with the name of the scholarship in the subject line and the following attachments: 1) statement (500 words maximum) providing personal insight into the role(s) played by co-operatives, non-profits, and social enterprises in shaping your professional and/or academic career and how this award will assist you in shaping your career and 2) a short statement (2-3 sentences) describing financial need.

Isobel and Len Findlay Travel Award

The Isobel and Len Findlay Travel Award is offered annually to provide financial travel support to a graduate student studying co-operatives or the broader social economy to present at an academic-related conference or for travel for other formal academic study or experiences approved by the student's graduate faculty advisor.

Application is open to graduate students entering or continuing studies in a University of Saskatchewan Master’s or Doctoral program conducting research on co-operatives or the broader social economy. Students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in the Social Economy, Co-operatives, and Nonprofit Sector (GSECN) are also eligible to apply.

How to apply: Send an email to coop.studies@usask.ca with the name of the scholarship in the subject line and the following attachments: 1) a summary (500 words maximum) of your research and/or course of study and how it demonstrates your commitment to exploring the transformative potential of democratically governed co-operatives and/or other social economy enterprises and how you would use this travel funding to support your knowledge mobilization activities and 2) a letter of support from your faculty supervisor that includes the graduate program you are entering or enrolled in.
