JSGS Public Lecture ~ Nation Building: Reclaiming Indigenous Laws and Increasing Foundational Capacity

University of Regina University of Saskatchewan Video Conference

Featuring Dr. Jaime M.N. Lavallee, Director of Indigenous Governance, Law and Policy, File Hills Qu’Appelle Tribal Council

Federal legislation denied Indigenous Nations their own governance systems for centuries, and the Western-Euro systems of governance that were imposed on them resulted in social, political, and economic realities that led to the placement of Indigenous populations on the bottom of almost every indicator of well-being. One of the goals of Nation (re)Building is strengthening the Indigenous Nations in order to preserve, maintain, and sustain Indigenous language and culture.  Law development is considered one of these tools. Jaime Lavallee will discuss how Indigenous nations are working with community researchers and lawyers to elevate oral histories and traditions to their truer forms of laws, which would help preserve, maintain and strengthen the language, culture, and provide a foundational governance institution.
